Lucent: Making personal health data meaningful through A.I.

Lucent is an artificial intelligence powered home device that assists individuals to understand their health conditions effortlessly. Keeping track of each family member's health data, Lucent also facilitates family health information sharing and understanding. This project was completed in partnership with Cognizant, an IT consulting company as a client.
Cognizant, our client, inspired us to explore the future by design that utilizes Artificial Intelligence. We decided to focus on Personal Health & Health IT as we noticed that with technology advancements, enormous amount of personal health data are collected. However, people are not making efficient use of their personal health data. We believe A.I. can be the key to this problem by bridging health data and people because A.I. and Big Data goes hand in hand.
In order to know how people access and make use of their personal health information, we conducted more interviews with college students and working adults. We researched extensively on Electronic Health Record (EHR), a health IT trend. We found:
- People are aware of their personal health trends tracked by mobile devices, yet make little effort and lack knowledge to use such data.
- Due to busy schedules, many people are only conscious of their health conditions when they get sick.
- EHR is technologically feasible yet hard to work in real life because of divergent business interests, regulation and privacy issues. Aggregating personal health info is difficult.
In short, people cannot make efficient use of their personal health data because they do not have easy access to the data, and lack time & understanding of the data.
- Health apps and wearables are only powerful when users understand how to utilize the product and are conscious of their everyday well-beings.
- Understanding family health history benefits individual well-being in the long run.
Therefore, given the difficulty of aggregating personal health info and people's reluctance to understand data, how do we get an everyday person to make use of their data in a meaningful way? We need a solution that seamlessly integrate into user's lifestyle and enable users to learn their health conditions with minimal effort.
After going through 30+ high level concepts and conversation with our client Cognizant, we reached the bathroom mirror concept. Bathroom is an ideal place for micro-intervention. It is a place of daily routine for individuals and their families, making health data collection convenient. Furthermore, technology advancements such as wide applications of facial recognition and machine learning provide opportunity gap for us to gather and analyze personal health data without users' effort.
Our final solution is Lucent, a smart mirror that utilizes artificial intelligence to assist individuals to understand and be proactive on their health conditions effortlessly. Lucent also creates a caring family health environment by storing and sharing each family' member's data
How lucent works
Lucent uses facial recognition to detect registered users for privacy protection. Once recognized the user, Lucent then starts scanning and analyzing health features.
Lucent collects and displays basic vitals including body temperature, heart rate, and hours of sleep. These information is stored in the cloud for future use.
Detailed information can be retrieved by tapping. Lucent compares user's current health states to their previous ones, as well as sleeping and activity habits it learned over time to give users personalized tips.
Long-term Use + Role of AI
All data tracked daily by Lucent is transferred and stored in a family cloud. People can access their family’s present health conditions and histories instantly. Utilizing Machine learning, the A.I. system within the mirror learns the living habits and average health conditions each individual in the family over time through the daily health data it collects. Lucent can then give more and more personalized health advices for the family as a whole.
How Lucent utilizes cutting-edge technologies
The unique physical characteristics of each individual, such as fingerprints, is used for automated recognition that secure user privacy.
Utilizing Machine learning, Lucent learns the living habits and average health conditions of each individual over time through the daily health data collected. By combining vast amount of patient data with A.I., algorithms (here at CMU) are beginning to be able to predict diseases before they’ve even developed.
Lucent utilizes facial recognition to protect health data security for registered users. More importantly, facial recognition is now used in disease detection, which is applied in Lucent to help notify users any abnormal health symptoms.
Research + Comparative Analysis on the Application of Technologies
Artificial Intelligence is no doubt powerful, yet algorithms do not automatically create better societal outcomes. After going through our design process for this project, I believe that Human-centered Design should bridge AI and humanity. In our design, the massive amount of personalized health data available is only made valuable when people understand and make use of them with the assistance of our AI-powered product.
Without Design, the power of data and AI cannot be efficiently utilized to solve existing problems in our society. The empathetic and creative natures of Design counterbalance the shortcomings of Artificial Intelligence for us to make the most out of technologies.
Our client Cognizant actually released a Concept Video on AI-powered bathroom mirror on their official Facebook page. This shows that our design thinking to utilize the emerging technology is on track with the industry's trend.
